Charles O. Witte letterbook, 1861-1867.

Letterpress copybook, 1 Jan. 1861 - 20 Nov. 1867, containing copies of outgoing correspondence written to business associates overseas during Civil War and Reconstruction. Chiefly business letters primarily addressed to commission houses in New York, and the European port cities of Liverpool (England), and Bremen, Rotterdam, and Hamburg (Germany). Correspondence provides insight into business and economic conditions in South Carolina during and immediately after the Civil War, including information re the import and export trade, blockade running, and agriculture.
